The University

Initially established as the Birmingham College of Arts in 1843, the college was designated as a polytechnic in 1971, but by 1992, the Further and Higher Education Act provided “university” status with a new name of University of Central England in Birmingham. Since 2007 the University was renamed to the now known, Birmingham City University.

It’s the second largest university in Birmingham (after the University of Birmingham) and has three main campuses serving four faculties. With over 27,000 students from 100 countries, the university offers courses in art and design, business, computing, education, engineering, English, healthcare, law, the performing arts, social sciences, and technology.

From 2011, the University has invested over £340 million into its campuses’ facilities with three major new developments in its City Centre Campuses. In 2012 the Parkside Building for Design and Media students opened; the Curzon Building, which houses Business, Law and Social Science courses as well as new library and support facilities opened in 2015, and their new music building for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire opened in 2017. There was also an extension to the City South Campus with specialist laboratories for new courses in sport and life sciences, which opened in 2018.

Birmingham City University

An excellent reputation

97% of students are in employment or further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2016/17) – which places Birmingham City University in the top ten multi-disciplinary institutions in the UK.

The university also runs a Meet or Beat scholarship, encouraging students to achieve their full potential. So, if you hold an offer and “Meet or Beat” their published entry requirements, you could be eligible for a £1,000 scholarship.
