Sustainable Shops in Sheffield

5 March 2021

Within the last few years, we have all started to see people using metal straws, reusable tote bags and even bamboo toothbrushes – but why?

Plastic reduction! Many of the single use plastics we use in everyday life, including food packaging, bottles, straws and bags, are all non-biodegradable and produced using fossil fuels. Both these factors have an impact on global warming and there are many ways we can all play a part to reduce our impact and protect the wonderful world we live in!

So how can you help? There are many ways students can avoid or reduce plastic waste and shopping sustainably is one of them. We have gathered a list of our favourite sustainable shops in Sheffield.

Zero Waste Shop

A must visit for students, Sheffield’s Zero Waste Shop is located at Sheffield Students’ Union and offers a variety of products including spices, herbs, wholefoods and household products. They also have sustainable practical kitchenware (we love their eCoffee Cups and cool bamboo cooking utensils!).

If you do visit this cool shop, remember to bring an empty container or tote bag (maybe you are luckily enough to have a Novel tote bag?!) anyway, don’t worry if you forget, you can still buy a recyclable paper bag.

Unwrapped

Another one of Novel’s favourite sustainable shops, found at 152-154 Crookes, Sheffield S10 1UH. Trust us, there is no way you will be able to leave Unwrapped empty handed! Once you get in, you can pick from an amazing range of sustainable products like pasta, spices, soaps and toothbrushes.

P.S. Our personal recommendation is to grab a delicious sustainable snack for your walk home, like their spicy chickpeas – tasty and filling!

Just Natural

If you are tired of constantly recycling every time you cook a meal or don’t have the option to go plastic free at your local supermarket, then you have to visit the most colourful sustainable shop in Sheffield – Just Natural.

In this shop you have a selection of fresh produce to choose from, with vegetables to fruits, everything is plastic free and of course, you can grab as much as you like! There is also a dedicated dairy food section, all of course sustainably sourced and affordable with student friendly pricing.

Top tip – best to visit Just Natural on a rainy day; the cosy interior and colourful entrance will definitely brighten up your day!

Vintage Shops

Shopping second hand is a great way to reduce clothes waste and let’s be honest, the older fashion is always coming back in!

Sheffield has many vintage and charity shops including Vulgar, Thrifty Store and Preloved Kilo – all these shops are great places to find some vintage gems and of course some unusual fancy dress clothes and accessories for your student nights out!
