Novel Students Top Sustainability Tips

22 April 2022

With Earth Day celebrated on the 22nd April each year, this year’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet”, a theme to encourage us all to take positive steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

Substantiality isn’t just about cutting the cost of your living (to fight the recent increase in energy bills) but also to protect and lessening the impact we have on our environment.

Whether it’s picking up litter, using reusable alternatives, getting on a bike instead of driving, there are many simple ways to be more sustainable.

Have a read of our top tips below to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle:

1)    Use reusable alternatives

Plastic AKA single use products cause a lot of landfill and can also usually end up littering the ocean. Plastic alternatives included using:

  • A tote/long life bag for groceries
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Paper straws
  • Bamboo toothbrush
  • Glass containers
  • Travel mugs

The list continues, but these are just some alternatives you can start with (you’ll probably save a bit of money by refilling your water bottles for free too)

2. Recycle and reuse

Every year approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted, so it’s important we try and reuse items before binning them.

We commonly find plastic containers used by takeaway services (everyone loves a takeaway right?!). Well instead of throwing these after use, clean them out and use them as tupperware for your food prep! Here are some other examples of how you can reuse home items.

*Make sure you also check out the toogoodtogo food app, collect food at almost half the cost before its sell by date, so it’s not wasted*

Lastly, recycling. We all also have access to recycling, if this isn’t at home then you will have nearby spots or supermarkets which you can recycle at, just make sure you place everything in the correct bins.

3) Save energy

Something we have all been hit by recently, everyone is looking for some top tips to reduce their bills, and by using less energy we also reduce the amount of carbon emissions. Simple steps like below we make a huge difference to your bills, if carried out consistently:

  • Turning off lights and heating (don’t worry we have sensored lights in our en-suite accommodation).
  • Filling up your in-apartment washer-dryer and dishwashers before use.
  • Taking short showers.
  • Wash your clothes at a lower temperature.
  • Turn off standby appliances.

4) Go paperless

Paper accounts for around 26% of total waste at landfills and it also massively contributes to air pollution and deforestation. So, what can you do to help? You probably get contacted by your bank or other companies that encourage you to go paperless in turn for online statements and communications, this change takes less than 10 seconds to do, so we encourage you to make the switch (because every little helps!).

5) Donate

On the similar lines of recycling and reusing, if you have some clothes or products you don’t wear or use anymore, give them to charity, a friend or even sell them online to make some extra money. Sites like Vinted, Facebook Marketplace and eBay are all great places to sell or exchange clothing (they are usually free of charge to set up an account too).

These are just some top tips to being more sustainable. There is a lot more advice online, and we recommend you following some of these Instagram accounts for inspo and hacks on sustainable cleaning products, shopping, food advice, and more:
