My Top 5 Must Read Books

5 March 2021

When we read books, the stories transport us to another world. We get immersed in the storyline and we are desperate to know what happens next!

As well as being a great escape mechanism, reading has many other positive benefits like mental stimulation, vocabulary expansion and stress reduction. It also improves your analytical skills, all of which will have a positive impact on your studies!

So, why not give our recommendations a go, we promise your current series on Netflix isn’t going anywhere and it’s good to minimise screen time (especially if you’ve been working on your laptop all day!).

As always, comment below and let us know what you think!

Normal People

Moving from a small hometown to a large city to study is a challenging experience in itself , let alone if we add a complicated love story into the mix!

Normal People by Sally Rooney tells the story of an on-and-off romance of Connell and Marianne who move away from home to study in Dublin.

The book explores their lives and the challenges of a young relationship. We warn you, it’s a roller-coaster of emotions, but it does remind us all of the importance of expressing our feelings and looking after our mental health.

The Shadow of the Wind

This book tells the story of a young boy called Daniel whose father takes him to visit a hidden Cemetery of Forgotten Books in the old City of Barcelona. The cemetery has a library of obscure and forgotten books that have long gone out of print and Daniel is allowed to pick one to read….

As he grows up, some mysterious events take place and it’s all linked back to the book he took from the Cemetery – a thrilling story which will make you as curious as Daniel.

Harry Potter

This one doesn’t really need an introduction, but it must be on our Novel list!

As I am sure you are all aware, this is a series of fantasy novels based around a young wizard called Harry Potter and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Extremely well-known, but nonetheless not to be overlooked as a must read, this is a great chronicle about the world of magic, wizards, friendship and families.

P.S. it’s best read with a warm blanket and a cup of hot tea on a winter evening.

Vicious

A story about two college roommates, Eli and Victor. Both arrogant characters who soon realise they have a lot in common, a shared interest in adrenaline, near death experiences and supernatural events.

They start to experiment with supernatural abilities, as you do, but things take a turn for the worse and the two friends end up as archenemies.

Ten years on, Victor escapes from prison and tries to find Eli, searching for his long-lost best friend.  A story full of twists and turns, filled with emotions, losses and revenge – a tricky book to put down!

Al Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order

Written by Dr. Kai-Fu Lee – one of the world’s most respected experts on artificial intelligence (AI), this provocative book outlines the power of AI and the impact it will have on our future.

Kai discusses the upheaval of traditional jobs and how the unemployed will find new ways of living, on top of the Chinese and American governments having to deal with an ever-changing economic landscape. A heavier read than our other suggestions but fascinating all the same.
