Making Your University Room a Home

17 September 2020

There’s no place like home! A place where you can do whatever you want in your own time and space. Everyone has their own style and that’s why we all adapt our rooms; to fit our needs and wants! The best way to go about what we want is to decorate a room ourselves.

Everyone has their own style and you can certainly be adventurous with interior design. Whether you want to spend a bit of money or are looking for something more affordable, there are plenty of options for you. From lighting to plants, here are some ideas for styling your new room.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of any living space; it has the ability to change the mood of a room just as it does the perceived size of a room. Sometimes a bedroom light can be bright and overwhelming, especially when studying. Desk lights and neon boxes are a great edition to a room, they look great and the lighting isn’t so intense. We love this light box from typo, you can also add some motivational words, check it out here
PS – At Novel we have dimming lights in our rooms, which is great for setting the ambience of your space to your mood throughout the day.

Wall art

You’re not allowed to paint your room but there’s always other ways you can decorate the walls!  Why not try Washi Tape, this magical Japanese masking tape is completely removable and reusable. You can use the patterns and colours of the tape to design some funky new wall art or maybe some words of motivation near your desk to help you study. Not really an artist? That’s fine, why not try tapestry or invest in some wall art, at Novel you can put up pictures! Here’s some cool art work from Urban Outfitters home, worth a check out here

Greenery

Studies have proved that indoor plants reduce stress and boost your mood, not only will this help you study but they will also give your room some character! Some plants need some TLC, so we suggest you start with something easier like an Aloe Vera or Jade plant. Have a look at Patch Plants website here, they have a great selection of plants and cool pots alongside clear instructions.

Noticeboards

Notice boards and magnetic memo boards are a great way to fill an empty wall space, you can usually hang accessories and add pictures to the board too – giving it a bit more character!  Top tip – hang your board up using a command hook, they are removable wall mounts that won’t leave a trace. Ikea have a great selection of affordable boards, check them out here.

Storage

This is likely to be your new home for 1, 2, 3 years, or maybe even more! Whether you are a UK or international student, you are likely to accumulate quite a few belongings over this time. Novel rooms have been built with this in mind, with boutique shelving units, large wardrobes and under the bed storage, ensuring a de-cluttered space for optimum focus. But to make the most out of your space, try storage dividers and organisers. You can get these almost anywhere, but we love these storage trunks from Made here. Another benefit of organisers is that you can get some funky colours and patters which will again, brighten up your room while keeping it all organised!

Happy decorating!
