Home to the world-class universities of the University of Leicester and De Montfort University, Leicester is a buzzing student city.

The largest city in the East Midlands, it is renowned for its vibrant city centre, award-winning green spaces and plethora of things to do.

From family-friendly outings to student musts, here’s our guide to the most fun things to do in Leicester:

King Richard III Visitor Centre

Built on the grounds where the buried king’s remains were found, it is much more than a museum.

Especially great if you’re a student studying History or Sciences, visiting here will be educational and exciting.

Explore through time as you move through the 3 galleries:

  • “Dynasty” is the first of the galleries, exploring the King’s rise to power, life and the War of the Roses.
  • “Death” details how he was betrayed during the battle of Bosworth and became the last British king to die in battle
  • “Discovery” tells the fascinating story of how his remains were discovered and identified

National Space Centre

An out-of-this-world experience for all ages, perfect for a fun day out (especially if you have family visiting you at university).

Gaining a Travellers’ Choice award, the National Space Centre is in the top 10% of attractions in the world.

Home to the United Kingdom’s largest planetarium, six interactive galleries, and even a 42m high rocket tower.  They also regularly hold special events.

Leicester Cathedral

Although now closed for renovations until Autumn 2023, Leicester Cathedral is part of Leicester’s heritage and had to be included in the list.

An updated site map reveals a brand new visitor and learning centre, immersive exhibition gallery and flexible learning spaces on the horizon.
