The University

Queen Margaret University was founded in 1875 and is located in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The University is named after Saint Margaret, wife of King Malcolm III of Scotland and is one of the smaller campuses, offering a friendly and supportive environment to students.

Queen Margaret University, often shortened to QMU, offers students a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. These courses are focused on specialist areas such as healthcare, media, creative industries, and business management.

Located just outside of the capital, close to the picturesque seaside town of Musselburgh, the vibrant campus community offers a great environment in which to study. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the local area provides stunning coastline views and easy access to the beautiful Scottish parks and countryside. Travel to Edinburgh is also simple, only six minutes away by car or train, you’ll have access to all the amenities of the city, including pubs, clubs and nightlife.

The university’s smaller size means students feel a strong sense of community, where you’ll soon feel at home with familiar faces amongst staff and fellow students. There’s also an impressive range of societies and extracurricular activities that you will have the opportunity to partake in. There is a variety of options, from sports such as Gaelic Football, to sociable events like Dungeons & Dragons – there’s a society for everyone!

An excellent reputation

The university has three flagship areas: health and rehabilitation; creativity and culture; and sustainable business with seven main research centres.

A major benefit of studying with QMU is the access to a blend of both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Many courses will offer hands-on work placements with backing and accreditation from recognised professional bodies.

This unique course structure has led QMU to have one of the highest post-graduation employment rates in Scotland. With only 3% of students in unemployment 15 months after graduating, well below the national average of 5%.

Alongside leading research, education and teaching facilities, QMU is also well-regarded for its sustainability and social responsibility. As one of Scotland’s most sustainable campuses, the university buildings have earned the top rating of ‘excellent’ by the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).
